Websites
To Use Or Not to Use?
|
|
Should you use websites as resources
for your research papers?
An article you find using an online database such as EBSCOhost's
Academic Search Elite also exists in a journal in print.
It's just delivered online through your Librarys website.
Deep or hidden web resources obtained through your Library are considered
reliable unlike many websites
on the surface or public web.
Websites
need to be evaluated for quality before using
as a reliable information source. |

|
There are basically two "webs."
- Surface or public web: the stuff search engines find
- Deep or hidden web: the stuff you access through your Library
|
Strengths of the surface web:
- to obtain information on colleges, museums, non-profit
organizations, or companies
- for very current information such as news, sports scores,
weather, stock quotes
- to research a well-known event or individual
- to use
online job postings, shopping, auctions, or travel services
- for opinions on a topic
|
 |
 |
Strengths
of the deep web:
- to find books and eBooks on your topic
- to access articles in scholarly journals and popular magazines
- to search online databases that index articles in many academic disciplines
- to find encyclopedia articles and other reference resources
- to
locate the full text of articles or books that are copyrighted
